Richard "Rip" Crystal was born in New York and raised in Long Beach, Long Island. He moved to Los Angeles in 1975 to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Over the past thirty years, he has produced and written countless television shows, including Life’s Most Embarrassing Moments and Planet’s Funniest Animals. With executive producer Rob Reiner, he produced But Seriously, the award-winning documentary on political standup comedy; in 2002, he created and produced the feature film, Murder by Numbers, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Gosling. Crystal has sung and produced four pop/jazz albums performing the classic standards he first heard in the Commodore Music Shop, a legendary family record store in Manhattan that was managed by his late father. His first work of fiction, A Reign Supreme, was published in 2013 by Open Road Media. In 2009, Crystal underwent open heart surgery to replace his aortal valve which literally gave him a new lease on life. The experience is chronicled in his recent memoir, Journey of the Heart (2017).
