Jim Kempton is a well-known pioneer in the surf & action sports industry, an editor, media marketing authority, author, public speaker and historian. He was Editor and Publisher of Surfer Magazine, Group Publisher for TransWorld Publishing, and Director of the Quiksilver Crossing setting up programs for the brand around the globe. For most of the last decade Kempton worked as Media Director of Billabong, surfing’s top lifestyle brand.
He currently contributes to the national and international surfing publications, and consults to businesses in and outside of the surf industry. He also writes a frequent opinion column for three papers. Awarded the California Arts Award of Excellence in Editorial Writing, Kempton has written hundreds of articles on surfing and other topics.
President of the California Surf Museum, where he has served for the last 8 years, Kempton is also the Manager of the Surfrider Foundation Advisory Board as well as on the board of directors for Surfing America, the National Governing Body of the sport.
Kempton holds an M.B.A in International Business and a B.A. in Journalism from the United States International University. He is a world traveler who has surfed or lived in over 30 countries. Born on Guam, growing up and learning to surf in the South Pacific and South-east Asia, he lives in San Clemente with his wife, still surfs, travels and enjoys his 3 children.
