Since 2007 OC Public Libraries has hosted Literary Orange, Orange County’s premier literary event aimed at uniting authors, readers, and libraries in a celebration of literature.
On a Saturday morning readers from all over southern California make their way to the Newport Marriott to spend the day with their favorite authors and books. Greetings are exchanged. People catch up. New connections are made. A reunion or two. Authors meanwhile are readying themselves and preparing the material for their talks. First items: Savor a pastry and a cup of coffee. Buy books to be autographed later. – Feeling great and ready for the day.
Literary Orange opens with an inspiring keynote address, setting the tone for the day. Everyone gathers in the main ballroom, eyes fixed on one person and his or her message to share. Afterwards there’s an opportunity to have your books signed, speak with the authors, and then off to the panels of your choice.
There are three panels and autograph sessions. Genres range from food, memoir, and mystery to poetry, sci-fi, and suspense. Choices, choices; but then there’s 40 minutes each for engaging conversations and inside looks into the authors’ books and writing processes, with some Q & A for good measure.
Invigorate your spirit at mid-day. Lunch is served and conversations begin filling the ballroom with energy and laughter. The delights to the palate meld with the camaraderie and pave the way for the second half of the day. Meanwhile throughout the day there is time for book browsing and purchases, a quick bite, and more socializing. Explore and discover.
After a final panel, the day rounds out with the second keynote address. All the inspirations of the day are now summed up. A nicely satisfied stomach helps lend to open ears, so dessert doesn’t distract but adds a flourish to the day. One final opportunity for autographs, sharing words with the authors, and book purchases.
Every April in sun-kissed Newport Beach over 450 fellow readers and over 30 authors gather for a day of authors, readers, and conversation. Over four hours of author talks. Join us this April for Literary Orange.
