Scott Martelle Scott Martelle photo

Scott Martelle is an Irvine-based journalist (former LA Times staff writer) and author of the just-released The Fear Within: Spies, Commies and American Democracy on Trial (Rutgers), which is a narrative retelling of the 1949 trial of the leaders of the American Communist Party that helped usher in the McCarthy era. His first book, Blood Passion: The Ludlow Massacre and Class War in the American West, was published to rave reviews in 2007. Martelle, who is at work on a history of Detroit, also teaches journalism at Chapman University.
