Ngũgĩ is a Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at UC Irvine. A novelist, essayist, playwright, journalist, editor, academic and social activist from Kenya, he lived through Kenya’s War of Independence (1952-1962), a major theme of his novel, Petals of Blood (1977).
